Rand Funeral Cover is built for foreigners living in South Africa — Zimbabweans, Mozambicans, Malawians, Congolese, Nigerians, and every African national who calls South Africa home but has family across the continent.
Pay in rand. Cover your family anywhere in Africa. Get a payout within 48 hours when it matters most — without international complications.
South Africa is home to millions of African nationals from Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, the DRC, Nigeria, Zambia, and across the continent.
You work here, pay taxes here, send money home — but when someone dies back home, standard South African funeral policies don’t cover it. They were written for South African families, not yours.
Rand Funeral Cover is designed specifically for foreign nationals living in South Africa. It covers your family members still living in Africa — your parents in Harare, your siblings in Maputo, your relatives in Kinshasa. Premiums are affordable, priced in rand, and the cover pays out directly to your nominated beneficiaries within Africa.
This is not an international policy. It’s an Africa-to-Africa policy — built for the reality of African families spread across the continent, and for the African foreign nationals in South Africa who support them.
In practice
Your beneficiaries receive a rand-denominated payout directly — no currency conversion, no delays, no international wire transfer fees. You pay in rand, they receive in rand or local currency equivalent within Africa.
Cover family members living in Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, DRC, Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, and 25+ other African countries. This is not a global policy — it is specifically built for African families within Africa.
Africa only · Not internationalIf a covered family member passes away in South Africa or another African country, we coordinate and cover the repatriation back to their home country within Africa. Cross-continental repatriation outside Africa is not included in this plan.
Within Africa onlyOnce valid documentation is submitted through the Mutual Life Africa app, we process claims within 48 hours. Your family gets a decision and the money without weeks of back-and-forth — because funerals in Africa can't wait.

Common questions
I'm a foreigner living in South Africa — can I apply?
Yes. Rand Funeral Cover is designed specifically for foreign nationals living in South Africa — whether you're on a work permit, asylum seeker permit, permanent residency, or any valid immigration status. You do not need to be a South African citizen.
Can I cover my family back home in Zimbabwe, Mozambique or Nigeria?
Yes — as long as they are living in an African country. Rand Funeral Cover covers family members resident anywhere on the African continent. This includes Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Nigeria, Zambia, Kenya, DRC, Tanzania, and 25+ more African countries.
Does this cover international repatriation — like to the UK or USA?
No. Rand Funeral Cover is an Africa-only policy. Repatriation is only covered within the African continent — for example, from South Africa back to Zimbabwe, or from Botswana to Nigeria. If you need international repatriation cover, see our International Funeral Cover (USD) or Diaspora Funeral Cover (GBP).
Can I cover family members living in Europe or North America?
No. This plan only covers family members living within Africa. If you have family outside Africa that you want to include, you will need our International Funeral Cover (USD) plan, which covers family globally.
How quickly does the payout reach my family?
Claims are processed within 48 hours of receiving valid documentation through the Mutual Life Africa app. Payouts are made in ZAR directly to your nominated beneficiary's bank account within Africa.
Which African countries are covered for repatriation?
We cover repatriation between African countries — including Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, DRC, Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Ghana, Senegal, and more. The full country list is shown during signup.
What if I move back to my home country?
Your policy continues as long as you keep it active and remain within Africa. Update your country of residence in the app and your cover continues uninterrupted.
Cover levels
All plans pay out in ZAR. Cover is for family members within Africa only. Monthly premiums are fixed — your price doesn't change as you get older.
