This document explains how Mutual Life Africa collects, uses, stores, and shares your personal data. It applies to all customers, policyholders, and members across all regions and currencies.

01 Who We Are

Mutual Life Africa is an insurance and financial services provider serving African nationals, diaspora communities, and expats globally. We provide funeral cover, life cover, group funeral cover, credit facilities, and related financial products across multiple currencies and regions.

Mutual Life Africa is the data controller responsible for the personal information collected through our website, mobile application, and all related services. Our registered address is 420 Fifth Avenue, Manhattan, New York, NY 10018, United States.

Mutual Life Africa operates as part of a broader group of companies. Our group includes African Mutual Capital, Mutual Life Global, and Taesan Insurance, each operating under their own terms but subject to shared data governance standards described in Section 6 of this policy.

This policy applies to all individuals whose personal data we process, including policyholders, group administrators, enrolled members, credit applicants, and visitors to our website and app.

02 Data We Collect

We collect the following categories of personal data:

Sensitive data. We may collect sensitive personal data such as nationality and identity documents as required for KYC verification. We handle this data with additional care and process it only for the purposes described in this policy.
03 Why We Collect It

We collect personal data for the following lawful purposes:

Contract performance — To create and manage your policy, process premium payments, and pay claims.
Legal obligation — To comply with KYC, AML, and regulatory requirements applicable in relevant jurisdictions.
Legitimate interests — To improve our products and services, prevent fraud, manage risk, and provide relevant communications across the group.
Consent — For optional communications such as product updates and newsletters, where you have opted in.
04 How We Use It
Creating and managing insurance policies and credit facilities
Processing premium payments and loan repayments
Verifying your identity and completing KYC checks
Processing and paying claims
Calculating and maintaining credit scores
Sending policy documents, invoices, and cover confirmations
Sending account alerts, payment reminders, and service notifications
Responding to enquiries and support requests
Detecting and preventing fraud and financial crime
Improving our products, services, and user experience
Assessing eligibility for products offered by our group companies and partners where relevant
Complying with legal and regulatory obligations
We do not sell your personal data to third parties for advertising or marketing purposes under any circumstances.
05 Who We Share It With

We share personal data only where necessary and only with the following categories of recipients:

Group companies — Our affiliated companies within the Mutual Life Africa group, for the purpose of delivering connected financial and insurance services. See Section 6.
Authorised business partners — Organisations we partner with to deliver services or products that may benefit you, subject to data sharing agreements and your applicable rights.
Payment service providers — Authorised payment processors used to collect premiums and disburse claim payments. Only the minimum data required to process a transaction is shared.
Communication service providers — Service providers used to deliver transactional emails, SMS notifications, and in-app messages on our behalf.
Regulatory and legal authorities — Government bodies, financial regulators, and law enforcement agencies where disclosure is required by law or court order.
Debt recovery agents — Where a credit facility has entered default and recovery action is required, limited identity and debt data may be shared with authorised collections agents.
Professional advisors — Lawyers, auditors, and compliance advisors bound by confidentiality obligations, where necessary for legal or regulatory purposes.
All third parties with whom we share personal data are required to handle it securely and in accordance with applicable data protection law. We do not permit them to use your data for their own marketing purposes.
06 Group Companies & Partners

Group companies. Mutual Life Africa is part of a group that includes African Mutual Capital, Mutual Life Global, and Taesan Insurance. We may share personal data within the group for the following purposes:

Providing connected insurance and financial services across the group
Assessing your eligibility for products offered by other group companies
Group-wide fraud prevention and risk management
Consolidated regulatory reporting and compliance
Improving the quality and consistency of services across the group

Business partners. We work with a select number of authorised partners — including financial institutions, distribution partners, and service providers — who may receive your personal data where necessary to deliver services to you or to fulfil a product or service you have expressed interest in.

All group companies and partners with whom data is shared are bound by data sharing agreements that require them to maintain the same standard of data protection as Mutual Life Africa. They may not use your data for purposes beyond those agreed.

Marketing from partners. We will only share your contact data with partners for marketing purposes where you have provided explicit consent to receive such communications. You may withdraw consent at any time by emailing privacy@mutuallife.africa.

07 Cross-Border Data Transfers

Mutual Life Africa operates globally and your personal data may be processed in countries other than your country of residence, including by our group companies and authorised service providers located in other jurisdictions.

Where personal data is transferred outside the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or South Africa, we ensure appropriate safeguards are in place including standard contractual clauses, binding corporate rules, data processing agreements, and transfers only to jurisdictions recognised as providing adequate levels of protection.

South African residents. Transfers outside South Africa are conducted in accordance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and only where the receiving party provides an adequate level of protection or where appropriate safeguards are contractually in place.

EU and UK residents. Transfers outside the European Economic Area are conducted in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and applicable UK data protection legislation.

08 How Long We Keep It

We retain personal data only for as long as necessary for the purposes for which it was collected, or as required by law.

After the retention period ends, personal data is securely deleted or anonymised so that it can no longer be linked to an individual.
09 Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:

Right of access — Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
Right to rectification — Request correction of inaccurate or incomplete personal data.
Right to erasure — Request deletion of your personal data where there is no longer a lawful basis for processing it.
Right to restrict processing — Request that we limit how we use your data in certain circumstances.
Right to data portability — Request your data in a structured, machine-readable format.
Right to object — Object to processing based on legitimate interests, including profiling for product eligibility assessments.
Right to withdraw consent — Withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent, including marketing from group companies or partners.

To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@mutuallife.africa. We will respond within 30 days. We may need to verify your identity before fulfilling your request.

Right to complain. South African residents may lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator at www.justice.gov.za/inforeg. EU and UK residents may complain to their local supervisory authority.
10 Security

Mutual Life Africa implements appropriate technical and organisational security measures to protect personal data against unauthorised access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction. These measures are reviewed regularly and updated in line with industry best practice.

Access to personal data is restricted to authorised personnel on a need-to-know basis. All third parties and service providers who handle personal data on our behalf are required to maintain equivalent security standards under the terms of our data processing agreements.

In the event of a data breach that is likely to result in a risk to your rights and freedoms, Mutual Life Africa will notify you and the relevant supervisory authority as required by applicable law and within the required timeframes.

Our website uses cookies and similar tracking technologies to improve your experience and analyse how our site is used. Cookies are small text files stored on your device when you visit our website.

Essential cookies are required for the website to function and cannot be disabled. Analytics cookies help us understand how visitors use our site and improve our content. Preference cookies remember your settings and choices between visits.

12 Children

Mutual Life Africa does not knowingly collect personal data from individuals under the age of 18 for account or policy creation purposes. Dependants under 18 may be registered under a parent or guardian's policy solely for the purpose of extending cover to them as permitted beneficiaries.

If you believe we have inadvertently collected personal data from a minor without appropriate consent, please contact us at privacy@mutuallife.africa and we will take prompt action to delete the relevant data.

13 Changes to This Policy

Mutual Life Africa may update this policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, group structure, technology, or legal obligations. When we make material changes we will notify you by email and update the effective date at the top of this document.

We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Continued use of our services after the effective date of any update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
