Group Funeral Cover

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything your HR team, group admin, or organisation committee needs to know before enrolling.

Getting Started
What is Group Funeral Cover?

Group Funeral Cover is a single policy that covers an entire organisation — employees, community members, congregation, or group — under one contract. Each member gets funeral cover for themselves and up to 3 family members, at a fixed monthly rate per member. The group administrator manages the policy on behalf of all members. No individual applications, no medical underwriting.

Who can take out a group policy?

Any registered organisation with a minimum of 100 members. This includes employers, community and diaspora associations, churches and faith communities, stokvels and burial societies, NGOs, schools and universities, and funeral homes covering their own staff.

Insurance companies, brokers, underwriters, and cover resellers are not eligible.

What is the minimum number of members required?

The minimum group size is 100 members. The maximum is 1,000 members per group contract. Organisations with more than 1,000 members should contact us directly to discuss a tailored arrangement.

How do I enrol my group?

Start by completing the group quote form on this page. Select your currency, enter your member count, and submit your organisation details. A member of our team will contact you within 1–2 business days to finalise the group contract, confirm member details, and arrange payment.

Member management — adding individuals and their dependants — is handled through the MLA app after onboarding.

How long does it take to activate a group policy?

Once the group contract is signed and the first premium is received, the policy is activated within 2–5 business days. Each member will receive confirmation of their cover. Accidental death cover is immediate from the activation date. Natural causes cover becomes active after a 6-month waiting period.

Cover & Benefits
What does the cover pay out?

A fixed cash lump sum is paid directly to the nominated beneficiary on the death of a covered member or their registered dependant. Cover amounts are: $5,000 USD · £5,000 GBP · €5,000 EUR · R15,000 ZAR. The payout is the same for the principal member and each registered dependant.

Are dependants covered under each member?

Yes. Each principal member can register up to 3 dependants — a spouse or partner, and up to 2 children or qualifying family members. All registered dependants receive the same fixed cover amount as the principal member at no additional per-dependant charge. The group premium is charged per principal member only.

How many dependants can each member add?

Each principal member can add a maximum of 3 dependants: 1 spouse or partner, and up to 2 children or qualifying dependants. All dependants must be under 70 years of age at the time of registration.

Is repatriation included?

Yes. Repatriation benefit is included in all group plans. ZAR plans cover repatriation within Africa. USD, GBP, and EUR plans cover international repatriation. This is particularly important for diaspora groups and cross-border families.

What is the maximum age for members and dependants?

The maximum entry age for both principal members and dependants is 70 years old. Members or dependants who are already over 70 at the time of enrolment cannot be added to the group policy. Members who turn 70 after enrolment remain covered until the next renewal date.

Pricing & Payment
How much does Group Funeral Cover cost?

Premiums are charged per principal member per month. Base rates are: $4.99 USD · £3.99 GBP · €4.49 EUR · R25 ZAR. Each member's premium covers themselves and up to 3 registered dependants. Volume discounts apply for larger groups — see below.

Are there volume discounts for larger groups?

No. Group Funeral Cover is priced at a flat rate per member regardless of group size. The rate is the same whether your group has 100 or 1,000 members. There are no volume discounts or tiered pricing structures.

How is the group billed?

The group administrator receives a single consolidated invoice each month covering all members. For multi-region groups, the invoice is broken down by currency pool — USD members, GBP members, ZAR members — clearly itemised on one document. One payment per cycle. One renewal date for the entire group.

Can different members pay in different currencies?

Yes. Multi-region groups can have members billed across different currency pools — for example, UK-based members billed in GBP and South Africa-based members billed in ZAR — all under one group relationship. Each currency pool is priced and underwritten independently with no cross-currency conversion applied.

What payment methods are accepted?

USD, GBP, and EUR premiums are billed via card, bank transfer, and direct debit options. Payment is made at the group level by the administrator — individual members do not need to make separate payments unless the organisation chooses to collect contributions internally.

Claims
How does a claim get submitted?

Claims are submitted through the MLA app or via email to your dedicated group account manager. The group administrator or the nominated beneficiary can initiate the claim. Our team will confirm receipt and guide you through the required documentation within 24 hours of submission.

How quickly is a claim paid out?

Once all required documents are received and verified, claims are paid within 48–72 hours. The payout goes directly to the nominated beneficiary in the currency of the policy. There are no delays for committee approvals or investigation processes for standard claims.

What documents are needed to claim?

Standard documents required for a claim: certified death certificate, ID of the deceased, ID of the nominated beneficiary, and proof of bank account for the payout. For repatriation claims, additional transport documentation may be required. Your account manager will confirm the exact requirements at the time of claim.

Is there a waiting period before claims can be made?

Accidental death is covered immediately from the policy activation date — no waiting period.
Natural causes have a 6-month waiting period from the date each member is enrolled. Claims submitted before the waiting period has elapsed for natural causes will not be payable.

Managing the Group
Can we add or remove members after the policy starts?

Yes. Members can be added or removed at any time through the MLA app admin portal. New members added mid-cycle are billed on a pro-rata basis for the remainder of the month. Removed members are covered until the end of the current billing cycle. The group invoice is automatically updated to reflect changes.

What happens if a member leaves the organisation?

When a member leaves, the group administrator removes them from the policy via the admin portal. Cover continues until the end of the current billing period. The departing member can apply for an individual MLA funeral cover policy if they wish to maintain personal cover after leaving the group scheme.

Who manages the group policy?

A nominated group administrator manages the policy on behalf of the organisation. This is typically an HR manager, treasurer, secretary, or community leader. The administrator handles member additions and removals, receives invoices, coordinates payments, and is the primary contact for claims and queries. Multiple administrators can be assigned to one group.

Is there an admin portal for group management?

Yes. Group administrators have access to the MLA app where they can view the full member list, add or remove members, update dependant details, download invoices, and track payment history. The portal is available on web, iOS, and Android. A dedicated account manager is also assigned to every group for direct support.

Eligibility
Can a group have members of mixed nationalities?

Yes. There are no nationality restrictions on group membership. A single group policy can cover members from Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Kenya, and the UK simultaneously. Members do not need to share nationality, citizenship, or country of residence to be enrolled together under one group contract.

Do members need to be in the same country?

No. Group members can be based across multiple countries and regions. Multi-region groups are billed in their respective currency pools — USD, GBP, EUR, or ZAR — all under one group relationship. This is designed specifically for diaspora associations, international NGOs, and companies with offices across borders.

Are insurance companies or brokers eligible?

No. Group Funeral Cover through Mutual Life Africa is not available to insurance brokers, underwriters, cover resellers, or any entity that would distribute or resell this cover as a product to third parties. For underwriting partnerships or white-label enquiries, contact partners@mutuallife.africa.

What types of organisations qualify?

Eligible organisation types include: employers and companies covering staff, diaspora and community associations, churches and faith communities, stokvels and burial societies, NGOs and non-profits, schools and universities, and funeral homes covering their own employees. The organisation must have a minimum of 100 members and a named group administrator.
