Please read these terms carefully before purchasing a Funeral Cover policy with Mutual Life Africa. These terms apply across all supported currencies and regions.
In these Terms and Conditions, the following definitions apply:
Policyholder eligibility. Funeral Cover is available to individuals aged 18 to 70 at the time of application. The Policyholder must complete KYC verification and provide a valid government-issued ID or passport number.
Family member eligibility. Family members registered under the policy must be between 0 and 70 years of age at the time of enrolment. Family members over the age of 70 at enrolment cannot be added. Family members who turn 70 after enrolment remain covered until the next renewal date.
Nationality and residency. There are no nationality or residency restrictions. Mutual Life Africa serves African nationals, diaspora communities, and expats globally.
No medical underwriting. No medical examination is required. All applicants within the eligible age range are accepted subject to these terms.
Funeral Cover is offered in three plans. Cover amounts and premiums vary by plan and Policy Currency as set out below:

Funeral Cover is available in four currencies. No cross-currency conversion is applied. Premiums and benefits are always in the selected Policy Currency.
Plan names by currency. USD plans are branded as International, GBP plans as Diaspora, EUR plans as Expat, and ZAR plans as Rand Funeral Cover. These are marketing names only and do not affect the terms or benefits of the policy.
Currency lock. The Policy Currency is fixed at the time of application and cannot be changed without cancelling and reapplying for the policy.
Who qualifies as a family member. Eligible family members include a spouse or partner, children, parents, siblings, and other qualifying dependants. The maximum number of family members is determined by the selected plan as set out in Section 3.
Age at enrolment. Family members must be 70 years old or younger at the time of registration. There is no minimum age for children. Family members enrolled as infants remain covered as they age, subject to the plan remaining active.
Adding family members. Family members may be added at the time of application or at any time during the policy by updating the policy through the Mutual Life Africa app. Newly added family members are subject to the waiting period provisions in Section 6.
Removing family members. Family members may be removed from the policy at any time. Removed family members are covered until the end of the current billing period. No refund is issued for the partial period.
Member count limit. The number of registered family members may not exceed the maximum for the selected plan. To cover additional family members, the Policyholder must upgrade to a higher plan.
Exclusions. The following are excluded from cover:
Monthly premiums. Premiums are charged monthly at the rate corresponding to the selected plan and Policy Currency as set out in Section 3. Rates are guaranteed for 12 months from the Activation Date.
Payment methods. USD, GBP, and EUR premiums are processed via PayPal. ZAR premiums are processed via PayFast.
Failed payments. If a monthly premium fails:
Submission. Claims must be submitted within 12 months of the date of death via the Mutual Life Africa app or by email to claims@mutuallife.africa. The Policyholder or nominated Beneficiary may submit a claim.
Required documents.
Processing time. Mutual Life Africa will confirm receipt within 24 hours. Once all documents are verified, the Cover Amount is paid to the Beneficiary within 48 to 72 hours in the Policy Currency.
Disputes. Rejected claims may be appealed in writing within 30 days by emailing disputes@mutuallife.africa.
Repatriation benefit. Repatriation of remains is included in all Funeral Cover plans as a contribution toward the cost of transporting the deceased to their country or region of origin.
ZAR plans. Repatriation under ZAR-denominated plans covers transport within Africa.
USD, GBP, and EUR plans. Repatriation under international currency plans covers international repatriation, including transport from any country to the country of origin of the deceased.
Single plan. The Single plan covers members within one country only. Repatriation under the Single plan is limited to the registered country of the policy.
Extended and Maximum plans. These plans support multi-country coverage and repatriation across multiple regions.
By the Policyholder. The policy may be cancelled at any time through the Mutual Life Africa app or by emailing info@mutuallife.africa. Cover continues until the end of the current billing period. No refund of premiums already paid will be issued.
By Mutual Life Africa. Mutual Life Africa may cancel the policy with 30 days notice for non-payment, fraud, misrepresentation, or failure to maintain KYC verification.
Lapse. A policy unpaid for more than 60 days from the suspension date lapses automatically. A lapsed policy cannot be reinstated. A new application with a new waiting period is required.
Mutual Life Africa collects and processes personal data about Policyholders and registered family members to administer policies, process claims, and fulfil regulatory obligations. All data is handled in accordance with Mutual Life Africa's Privacy Policy, the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) where applicable, and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) for EU-based policyholders.
Data may be shared with payment processors (PayPal, PayFast) and communication service providers solely for policy administration purposes. Mutual Life Africa does not sell or share personal data with third parties for marketing purposes.
These Terms and Conditions are governed by the laws of the State of New York, United States of America. ZAR-denominated policies are additionally subject to applicable South African insurance legislation.
Disputes that cannot be resolved through good faith negotiation within 30 days of written notice may be referred to mediation or binding arbitration. Mutual Life Africa reserves the right to amend these terms with 30 days written notice. Continued use of the policy after the effective date of any amendment constitutes acceptance.
