Everything you need to know about Life Cover, Funeral Cover, and Travel services — what each product does, who it's for, and how to choose.

What is Life Cover?

Life Cover is an insurance product that pays a large lump sum of money to your nominated beneficiary when you die. It is designed to replace your income, clear your debts, and provide your family with genuine financial security — not just enough to cover a funeral, but enough to sustain their lives without you.

Mutual Life Africa's Life Cover is available in ZAR and USD, making it accessible to Africans living in South Africa and across the diaspora worldwide. Cover ranges from R250,000 to R2,000,000 (ZAR) or $250,000 to $1,000,000 (USD), depending on your age and chosen plan.

Who is Life Cover for?

  • Anyone who is the primary earner in their household
  • Anyone with a mortgage, car loan, or significant debts
  • Anyone who wants to leave a financial legacy for their children
  • African expats and foreign nationals in South Africa aged 18–59

Important: Life Cover has a 12-month waiting period from the date of inception. No claims will be accepted for death within this period unless caused by an unforeseeable accident unrelated to any pre-existing condition.

What is Funeral Cover?

Funeral Cover is an insurance product that pays out quickly — within 48 hours of a valid claim — to cover the immediate costs of death. This includes the funeral itself, burial or cremation, repatriation of remains, and financial support for the family in the immediate aftermath.

Unlike Life Cover, which focuses on long-term income replacement, Funeral Cover is designed to act fast. Funerals happen within days of death, and the financial burden on families — especially those spread across multiple countries — can be enormous without the right cover in place.

Mutual Life Africa offers Funeral Cover in GBP, USD, EUR, and ZAR, covering families both in the country where the policyholder lives and back home in Africa.

What does Funeral Cover pay for?

  • Funeral and burial or cremation costs
  • International repatriation of remains (on all international plans)
  • Immediate financial support for the surviving family
  • Cover for multiple family members under one policy

Funeral Cover pays out a fixed lump sum — not a reimbursement. Your family receives the full cover amount and can use it however needed. The payout is made via bank transfer in the currency of the policy.

International Funeral Cover vs ZAR Funeral Cover

Mutual Life Africa offers two types of Funeral Cover — International (GBP, USD, EUR) and ZAR. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right product for your situation.

Life Cover vs Funeral Cover — what's the difference?

Both products protect your family, but they serve different purposes and work in different ways. Many families hold both.

Think of it this way: Funeral Cover handles what happens in the first week. Life Cover handles what happens in the years that follow. Together, they give your family complete protection.

What is repatriation cover?

Repatriation is the process of returning a deceased person to their home country for burial or funeral rites. For African expats and diaspora families, this is one of the most emotionally and financially demanding parts of losing someone — often involving funeral homes in two countries, embassies, airline cargo, documentation in different languages, and consular fees.

Mutual Life Africa's International Funeral Cover includes repatriation cover on all plans. This means the costs and logistics of returning your loved one home are covered as part of your policy — not as an optional add-on.

What does repatriation cover include?

  • Coordination with funeral homes in both countries
  • Embassy and consular documentation support
  • Airline cargo and mortuary transport arrangements
  • Associated transportation costs

ZAR Funeral Cover note: ZAR plans include Africa-to-Africa repatriation only. If you need repatriation to or from countries outside Africa, you will need an International Funeral Cover plan.
