FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about Rand Life Cover — split by topic for easy reading.

Cover & Eligibility
Rand Life Cover is available to African nationals living in South Africa or elsewhere in Africa, foreign nationals living and working in South Africa, and South African citizens. Eligible applicants must be between 20 and 59 years old and provide a valid government-issued ID or passport. Refugee travel documents are accepted subject to KYC/AML verification.
Cover ranges from R250,000 to R2,000,000 depending on your age band. The R2,000,000 option is available to applicants aged 30–59 only. All cover is paid as a lump sum in ZAR to your nominated beneficiary.
No. No medical examination is required. There is also no smoker surcharge and no occupation loading. Everyone in the same age band pays the same flat premium rate.
A 12-month waiting period applies from the date of inception. No death benefit claims will be paid for deaths within this period unless caused by an unforeseeable accident entirely unrelated to any pre-existing condition. The waiting period reapplies from the date of reinstatement if your policy lapses.
Yes. You can hold both policies simultaneously and each is managed independently. Many policyholders combine both — Funeral Cover for immediate costs and family protection, Life Cover for long-term income replacement. Each policy has its own premium, beneficiary, and claim process.
Premiums & Payments
Never. Your premium is fixed at your age band rate on the day you sign up and remains at that rate for the life of your policy, provided it remains active and in good standing. There are no annual reviews, no age increases, and no lifestyle adjustments.
Premiums are paid monthly via PayFast. Annual payment is not currently available. Payment is set up during the sign-up process in the app and deducted monthly on your policy anniversary date.
Premiums are refundable only within the 30-day cooling-off period from the date of policy issue, provided no claim has been submitted or is pending. After 30 days, premiums are non-refundable. They are not savings — they are payment for cover already provided during that period.
Policy Management
A 7-day grace period applies after a missed payment — cover remains active. After day 14 your policy is suspended. After day 30 it lapses. After day 60 it is permanently cancelled. Failure to receive notifications does not alter these timelines — keep your contact details updated in the app.
Yes — but only if the policy has lapsed, not cancelled. Reinstatement requires full payment of all outstanding premiums through the app. Cover recommences from the reinstatement date and the 12-month waiting period reapplies. Cancelled policies cannot be reinstated under any circumstances.
Yes. You can request a cover upgrade through the app or by contacting support. Changes take effect from the next billing cycle. Your original age-band rate applies to the upgraded amount — you are not re-rated to a higher age bracket.
Your cover remains active. Rand Life Cover does not lapse or cancel because you relocate. Update your contact details and country of residence in the app. If you want to change your policy currency after relocation, contact support@mutuallifeafrica.com.
Yes. Beneficiaries can be updated at any time through the app under your policy settings. If your beneficiary passes away before you, update your details immediately to avoid complications at claim stage. You can nominate multiple beneficiaries with specified percentage splits.
Claims
Claims are submitted through the app or via support@mutuallifeafrica.com. Required documents include the original certified death certificate, post-mortem or coroner's report, and government-issued ID for both the deceased and the claimant. The payout is made by bank transfer in ZAR to the nominated beneficiary.
The same documentation standards apply regardless of where the death occurred. Contact support@mutuallifeafrica.com immediately — our team provides country-specific guidance on obtaining required documentation when a death occurs abroad.
Claims are declined for: death within the 12-month waiting period (unless accidental), non-disclosed pre-existing conditions, terminal illness at application, death in sanctioned or conflict zones, suicide within 12 months, criminal or unlawful activity, and fraudulent or forged documentation. Full exclusions are listed in your policy document.
