When a family member passes away in Africa and you are in the United Kingdom, the first hours are consumed by grief and the weight of news you never wanted to receive. What follows in the next 24 to 72 hours is a cascade of practical demands that must be managed while still in the rawness of that grief.
Among those demands is initiating your Mutual Life Africa insurance claim. This guide walks through every step, in the right order, so you know exactly what to do and what to expect.
Step One: Notify Mutual Life Africa as Early as Possible
Contact Mutual Life Africa’s claims team as soon as you are able — ideally within 24 to 48 hours of the death. Early notification starts the process, gets you guidance on documentation requirements specific to the country where the death occurred, and allows Mutual Life Africa’s team to advise on anything unusual about your specific claim.
Contact options:
Email: info@mutuallife.africa — include your policy number in the subject line
Phone South Africa: +27 87 276 8885
Phone US office: +1 667 317 7991
You do not need to have gathered all your documents before making first contact. Notifying Mutual Life Africa early is the single most important action — the rest follows from it.
Step Two: Gather the Required Documentation
The standard documentation set for a Mutual Life Africa funeral cover claim consists of four items.
A certified death certificate issued by the relevant government authority in the country where the death occurred. In Nigeria this is the National Population Commission. In Ghana the Births and Deaths Registry. In Kenya the Civil Registration Services Department. In South Africa the Department of Home Affairs. In Zimbabwe the Registrar General’s office. Mutual Life Africa’s claims team will confirm the relevant authority for other countries.
The certificate must be certified — bearing an official stamp or signature from the issuing authority. A photocopy or an uncertified scan is not sufficient.
Proof of your relationship to the deceased. For a parent-child relationship: a birth certificate showing you as the child of the deceased. For a spouse: your marriage certificate. For siblings or other relationships: a family register, statutory declaration, or other official documentation confirming the relationship.
Your Mutual Life Africa policy number. Available in the Mutual Life Africa app under Policy Details, or in the original policy confirmation email Mutual Life Africa sent when you applied.
The beneficiary’s valid identification document. A current passport, national ID card, voter’s card, or equivalent government-issued photo ID for the person designated to receive the payout.
Step Three: Submit Your Documentation
Email your documentation to info@mutuallife.africa. Include your policy number in the subject line. Include a brief cover note explaining the relationship between yourself, the deceased, and your policy.
Clear, legible scans or photographs of documents are acceptable. Mutual Life Africa’s claims team will acknowledge receipt and confirm whether all required documentation has been received or whether anything additional is needed.
Step Four: Claims Assessment
Mutual Life Africa’s claims team reviews your documentation to confirm three things: that the deceased was an active covered member on your policy, that the cause of death is a covered event under your policy terms, and that the waiting period conditions are satisfied for natural cause claims.
For accidental death claims, processing begins immediately with no waiting period constraint.
Step Five: Payout to Your Beneficiary in Africa
Once the claim is approved, Mutual Life Africa initiates the payout directly to your named beneficiary via their preferred payment method — mobile money or African bank transfer. Your beneficiary will be contacted to confirm their payment details before funds are transferred.
What If Documentation Is Hard to Obtain
Obtaining certified official documentation in some African countries can be slow or administratively complex. Mutual Life Africa’s claims team has direct experience with this reality across all 54 African countries. Contact the team early, provide what you have, and communicate clearly about any documentation delays. The team works with available documentation rather than requiring everything simultaneously.
