African Student Insurance in the UK: Protecting Family While You Study

Studying in the United Kingdom is one of the most significant investments an African family can make. The costs are substantial: tuition fees, visa applications, accommodation deposits, living expenses, and flights represent years of saving. For many African families, the UK student represents both the family’s greatest financial commitment and its greatest hope.

And yet most African students arrive in the UK without any insurance covering the risk that everyone hopes will never materialise but that statistics show does, every year: the death of a young person far from home.

The Two Distinct Insurance Needs of African Students in the UK

African students in the UK actually have two separate insurance needs that are often conflated but serve entirely different purposes.

The first is insurance that covers the student themselves — specifically, repatriation cover in the event that the student dies while studying in the UK. This is the cost that falls on the family if something happens to the student abroad.

The second is insurance that covers the student’s family in Africa — specifically, funeral cover for parents, siblings, and other family members who might die while the student is in the UK. This is the cost that disrupts the student’s studies and financial situation if something happens to family back home.

Mutual Life Africa Scholar Plans: For Students Aged 18 to 35

Mutual Life Africa’s Scholar funeral cover plans are designed specifically for the first need: protecting the student themselves while studying abroad.

Scholar Basic at USD 4.99 per month provides a USD 1,000 cash payout plus full repatriation cover for the student.

Scholar Plus at USD 9.99 per month provides a USD 2,000 cash payout plus full repatriation cover.

Both plans cover one member — the student — aged 18 to 35. Both have a 60-day waiting period for natural causes. Accidental death is covered from day one. Premiums are paid via PayPal in USD.

The repatriation cover is the primary protection. If a student dies in the UK, the cost of returning them to their family in Africa — typically GBP 5,500 to GBP 10,000 — is funded by the policy rather than falling on a family that has already spent everything to fund the education.

Apply Before the Student Arrives in the UK

Both Scholar plans have a 60-day waiting period for natural causes. The best time to apply is before the student travels, while they are still in Africa. By the time they arrive at their UK university and begin their first semester, the waiting period is complete and full cover — including natural causes — is active.

At USD 4.99 per month, Scholar Basic costs less than a single coffee in most UK cities. For a family that has invested tens of thousands in a UK education, this is one of the most accessible and meaningful financial decisions available.

For the Family Back Home: Funeral Cover While the Student Is Away

The student studying in the UK also needs their family in Africa to be covered — because if a parent dies while they are studying, the financial and logistical consequences disrupt their studies, their finances, and potentially their visa status.

A UK-based student can take out a Mutual Life Africa GBP Diaspora funeral cover plan covering their parents in Africa. The Single Plan at GBP 24.99 per month covers up to 8 family members in one African country with a GBP 7,500 payout including repatriation.

Complete Protection for African Students in the UK

Scholar Basic or Scholar Plus for the student’s own repatriation cover, plus a Mutual Life Africa funeral cover plan for parents and family in Africa, creates complete two-directional protection — the student is covered if something happens to them, and the student’s family is covered if something happens at home.

Apply at mutuallife.africa. Scholar plans are available under Student Cover. Funeral cover for family is available under the standard GBP Diaspora Plans.
