How to Add Your Parents in Africa to Your UK Insurance Policy

One of the most common questions in the UK African diaspora community is whether it is possible to insure parents who live in Africa from the UK. The answer is yes — and the process is more straightforward than most people expect.

But there is a deadline attached to this answer that is more urgent for some families than they realise.

How Mutual Life Africa Family Funeral Cover Works for Parents in Africa

Mutual Life Africa’s funeral cover plans are family policies. You — the policyholder living in the UK — take out the policy, pay the monthly premium in GBP via PayPal, and add your family members in Africa as covered individuals. When a covered family member passes away, the payout goes to the named beneficiary.

Your parents do not need to take out their own policy. They do not need to apply separately. They do not need to visit a UK office, fill out forms, or understand the product. You apply in the UK, you add them, and they are covered.

The Age 70 Limit: Why This Is Urgent for Some Families

Mutual Life Africa’s funeral cover accepts new covered members up to the age of 70. Once a family member turns 71, they cannot be added to a new policy.

This is standard actuarial practice across the funeral cover industry globally. It exists because older individuals carry statistically higher mortality risk, and open-ended acceptance of new members without an age limit would make premiums unaffordable for everyone in the insurance pool.

The critical implication for UK African families: if your parents are in their late 60s, you have a limited and closing window to add them.

A parent who is 67 today will be 70 in three years. A parent who is 69 has one year before the window closes permanently.

Once a family member has been added to an active policy, their cover continues beyond age 70 indefinitely — as long as the policy remains active. The limit applies only to new additions.

Which Plan Do You Need to Cover Your Parents

If your parents are in one African country and you have 8 or fewer total members to cover: Single Plan at GBP 24.99 per month.

If your parents are in different countries from your other covered family members, or if you have more than 8 members: Extended Plan at GBP 49.99 per month covering up to 10 members across multiple countries.

If you have a large extended family across multiple countries: Max Plan at GBP 99 per month covering up to 15 members.

What Information You Need to Add Your Parents

To add a parent to your Mutual Life Africa policy you need: their full name as it appears on their ID, their date of birth, their country of residence, and their relationship to you.

You can add members through the Mutual Life Africa app under Manage Members, or by contacting info@mutuallife.africa with your policy number and member details.

No Medical Exam — Pre-Existing Conditions Are Not a Barrier

There are no health questions and no medical examination required. Your parents’ pre-existing conditions — hypertension, diabetes, or other common age-related conditions — do not disqualify them from being added.

The only condition is age: under 71 at the time of addition.

Apply Today

Visit mutuallife.africa. Select GBP. Choose your plan. Add your parents.

Check their ages before you do anything else. If they are under 70, the window is open today. Do not wait.

What Happens After You Add Your Parents

Once your parents are added to your active Mutual Life Africa policy, their cover is in place from the moment they are added. They are covered for accidental death immediately. Natural cause cover follows the completion of the waiting period.

You will receive confirmation of the addition through the Mutual Life Africa app and by email. If your parents’ details change — a relocation to a different city or country, a change in contact details — update their profile in the Mutual Life Africa app to keep the policy current.

For UK Africans whose parents are in their 60s, this is one of the most important financial actions they can take this year. Apply at mutuallife.africa and add your parents today.
